Environmentalists Not Too Savvy in Court: Experts

Jakartaglobe.beritasatu.com – Bribery aside, legal experts blamed cases that were just plain weak for the high frequency of failure of environmental lawsuits in Indonesia.

“It’s not just limited to [issues of integrity],” Indonesian Center for Environmental Law director Henri Subagiyo said on Wednesday. “Sometimes the lawsuits are very weak.”

The comments came a day after a Jakarta court ruled that US-controlled miner Newmont Nusa Tenggara could keep dumping waste in the ocean, rejecting a lawsuit brought by a coalition of nongovernmental organizations against a 2011 Environment Ministry decree that renewed the company’s right to do so.
