Understanding Anti-SLAPP Strategies That Can Be Taken

Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) is a strategy to stop or punish citizens who exercise their political rights with the aim of diverting public attention from public issues into the private sphere. In Indonesia, SLAPP cases have grown significantly with the trend of "criminalization" occupying the form of violation that is most often used to hinder the community's right to participate. WALHI noted that during 2014, 173 human rights defenders in the environment and natural resources sector were arrested (criminalized), of which seven were abused and two people died. This finding continues where until 2018, the number of victims of the criminalization of SLAPP for environmental fighters rose to 163 people.
