"History of the birth of the Indonesian Center for Environmental Law (ICEL)"

Founded on July 19 , 1993, ICEL is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that works its pathway toward environmental justice that is based on the values of democracy, human rights, civility, sustainability, the rule of law, and good sustainable development governance. In actualizing its purposes, ICEL runs its advocacy through research, capacity buildings, advocating cases, and knowledge management. Our works are done based on evidence.

 

The founders of ICEL are activists, lecturers, and advocates that are actively involved in public issues. These founders are Mas Achmad Santosa, Sandrayati Moniaga, Muchammad Zaidun, Benny K. Harman, and Wahyuni Bahar. Apart from being founders, Mas Achmad Santosa was also the first Executive Director from 1993 to 1999. Subsequently, ICEL was led by Wiwiek Awiaty (1999-2001), Indro Sugianto (2001-2006), Rino Subagyo (2006-2010), Henri Subagiyo (2010-2020), and now continued by Raynaldo G. Sembiring.

 

Many other figures and activists also participated in building ICEL, they are: Koesnadi Hardjasoemantri, Mas Achmad Santosa, Sandrayati Moniaga, Sukma Violetta, Takdir Rahmadi, Asep Warlan Yusuf, Indro Sugianto, Wiwiek Awiaty, Laode M. Syarif, Josi Khatarina, Andri G. Wibisana, Rino Subagyo, Windu Kisworo, Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, etc.
